Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, will beam its searchlight on the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, following the recent reactions that trailed public declaration of assets of the nation’s number one and two citizens and controversies generated, an insider has revealed.
Nigerian Pilot Sunday reliably gathered from the source that there were conscious efforts and secret moves by some public officeholders and their cronies to obtain new forms from CCB since last week’s declaration.
CCB, the body constitutionally mandated to verify and investigate assets declaration of all public officeholders came into the eye of the storm immediately after President Muhammad Buhari and his Vice, Prof. Yomi Osinbajo, publicly declared their assets.
An insider, who hinted Nigerian Pilot Sunday in confidence, said there was underground scheming by some public officeholders, especially governors, to obtain new asset declaration forms from the bureau.
He said, “Immediately after the President and his vice, publicly declared their assets last week, there were moves by some public officeholders and their cronies to obtain fresh forms.”
The source further averred that EFCC began to focus on the bureau based on the tipoff about the moves by these public servant, mostly governors, to obtain new forms, “and the fear of compromise by some bad eggs in the bureau”.
According to the source, the commission is also contemplating the option of having to collect and keep duplicates of all asset declaration forms already signed and submitted to CCB in cases of any fraudulent alteration.
Conscious effort made to reach the public relations officer, PRO of the bureau failed, findings however revealed that CCB staffs are under severe financial pressure by some public office holders seeking for new forms to change the assets earlier declared.
