Nigeria Association of the Blind, Edo State chapter, yesterday, urged the state government to grant bursary and free education to blind pupils/students.
Chairman of the association, Nosa Osemwota made the appeal while marking their day in Benin.
Osemwota said the reason why government should invest in education is because it is the best thing that can ever happen to any human being irrespective of his physical looks.
“We will like to state at this juncture that the best thing that can happen to any human being, including the blind, is education.
“Therefore, we plead with the blind who are still in school to take their education seriously.
“We appeal to Governor Godwin Obaseki to make education for the blind absolutely free including books, tuition and boarding fees, as it is obtainable in neighbouring states.
“We beseech the state government to give us a building to be used as our secretariat from where our official work can be carried out.
“Provisions should also be made to accommodate blind students at Ihogbe College Benin City,” he pleaded.
He thanked the governor for granting bursary award to students of Edo State origin across the 36 states in 2019, noting that some of them have graduated while more have gained admission into institutions of higher learning.
He also urged him to also use his office to approve the continuation of the bursary award every academic year to assist them in their studies.
