Protest by members of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASU, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, branch halted vehicular movement in Ile-Ife, Osun State yesterday.
The protesters, who stormed the streets of Ile-Ife at about 09.00am, marched from OAU campus gate to Mayfair roundabout.
The protesters were armed with placards reading which had different inscriptions such as ‘Nigeria Labour will never surrender’, ‘ASUU says no to high electricity tariff ‘, and ‘We voted for change not chaos’ among others.
The protesters lamented that majority of the federal government’s policies were anti-masses.
According to them, the FG needs to revert some of its policies especially hike in fuel price.
While addressing the crowd on the protest ground, Chairman of ASUU OAU, Dr. Caleb Aborisade, challenged the FG to demonstrate its care for the masses by reverting fuel price.
Aborisade, who was represented by Dr. Ayoka Abiodun, said, “If truly they are for the masses, they should not make life unbearable for them. Everyone can see that the hike in Petrol has worsened their living condition as virtually every consumable item has skyrocketed in their prices.
“Right now, things are going out of hand for common people as their purchasing power is weakening every day.”
On his part, Chairman of NASU OAU Chapter, Mr Wole Odewumi, said government was inflicting pains on the masses with increment in petroleum product.
Odewumi appealed to the FG to make policies that are “masses-friendly”, noting that would be a sign of good governance.
Meanwhile, commercial banks in Osogbo, the state capital, did not open for business transactions as some customers relied on ATM as a means of getting cash for their domestic use.

    MATTERS OF THE MOMENT:

WELL DONE ASUU AND NASU, NLC NEEDS YOUR FULL SUPPORT

ASUU AND NASU, THIS STRIKE BY YOU WAS OVERDUE. ONE YEAR INTO BUHARI’S ADMINISTRATION, BUHARI HAS PROVED HIMSELF TO BE A LIAR AND A DOWNRIGHT DECEPTIVE MAN WITH A MIND-SET OF A DICTATOR. BUHARI CANNOT BE TRUSTED WITH ANYTHING. HE IS NAIVE AND IS SURROUNDED BY CROOKS. BUHARI IS A STUBBORN DIE HARD MAN WHO WILL ONLY GET GOING WHEN LIFE GETS TOUGH FOR HIM.

BUHARI HAS ESTABLISHED THAT HE IS ANTI-POOR, ANTI-NIGERIANS AND ANTI-MASSES. BUHARI IS TOTALLY INSENSITIVE TO THE PLIGHT OF POOR NIGERIAN MASSES. ACTUALLY, BUHARI IS DEAD ON ARRIVAL. NOW IF ANY ORGANISATION IS TO SAVE NIGERIA, IT IS THE ASUU AND NASU IN CLOSE COOPERATION WITH NLC. TUC TURNED OUT TO BE TRAITOR.

THESE NEW APC LOOTERS WHILE CRYING WOLF ON ECONOMY, HAVE BEEN BUSY LOOTING THE TREASURY AND MAINTAINING HIGH LIFE STYLES, WHILE A COMMON NIGERIAN WORKER IS SUFFERING. WITH ELECTRICITY AND FUEL PRICE HIKE, THE PRICES OF COMMODITIES AND SERVICES HAVE TRIPLED IN A VERY SHORT SPAN OF TIME, NOT TO TALK OF FURTHER DEVALUATION OF NAIRA AND HIGHER INFLATION. IT IS THEREFORE HIGH TIME FOR NLC , ASUU AND NASU TO PUT FORWARD A NEW PROPOSAL FOR MINIMUM WAGE OF N120,000 BASED ON THE CURRENT PRICES OF GOODS AND SERVICES IN NIGERIA. A DECISION ON MINIMUM WAGE SHOULD BE ARRIVED AT WITHIN 30 DAYS NOT 6 MONTHS AS PROPOSED BY THE SLIMY BUHARI’S GOVERNMENT. THIS IS SO BECAUSE AFTER 6 MONTHS, THIS DEADWOOD DECEPTIVE GOVERNMENT WILL BE BUSY TALKING ABOUT 2019 ELECTIONS AND WILL CONTINUE TO PUT FORWARD DECISION ON WAGE INCREASE. THIS GOVERNMENT IS A SLIMY AND A LIAR GOVERNMENT AND CANNOT BE TRUSTED. BUHARI HAS DECEIVED AND FAILED NIGERIANS AND DESERVES AN APPROPRIATE PUNISHMENT BY THE PEOPLE OF NIGERIA.
