Traders in Onitsha, the commercial hub of Anambra State have described the recent protests and attack on Standard Organisation of Nigeria, SON, by some group of people purported to be members of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN, as an act of mischief and demanded an unconditional apology for the Director General of SON, Dr. Joseph Odumodu.
The traders, who spoke under the aegis of Anambra Traders Forum , ATF, at a Press conference in Onitsha yesterday, said all allegations against SON and their war against sub standard and fake products are false and baseless, noting that it was an attempt to malign the reputation of the organisation.
The chairman of the forum, Chief Daniel Okeke, who was flanked by other officers of the forum, noted that some people, led by one Benjamin Uzochukwu Nwizu, organised a protest against SON which allegedly carted away some of the pirated BIC shaving sticks from the warehouse of Bendusco International Ltd of which he is the managing director.
During the protest, Mr. Nwizu, according to him, alleged that the Director General of SON, Dr. Odumodu raided his company’s office, carting away goods and demanding the sum of N20 million from him, stressing that his forum had, after a painstaking investigation, found the allegation to be false, adding that SON was right in seizing the Bic shaving stick products because they were pirated.
He further said they discovered that Bendusco International Ltd was actually pirating the products of Lagos based Nigerian Ball Point Pen Industry Limited, which was the original manufacturer of Bic shaving sticks.
Bendusco International Ltd, he said, has his fake manufacturing outfits in Owerri road in Onitsha and Nsugbe in Anambra East council area of the state.
Okeke, however, called on the Managing Director of Bendusco, Mr. Nwizu, to tender an apology to the SON Director-General and the company he fakes its product for tarnishing their image through false and malicious allegations, adding that they found that the protest he organised was actually a ploy to bring SON to disrepute.
He also enjoined the Anambra State Police Command, the State Security Services, SSS, and other security agencies in the state to investigate the matter between the company and SON.
According to Okeke, “he organised the protest and mobilised his workers to the street in the name of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria ,MAN, Onitsha branch, which he is not even a member. We want to state that SON was right to have raided his company and made some seizures because he was faking the product of another company.
“He can’t indict the integrity of SON. We know what it takes to have a product registered with SON. We challenge him to produce certificate issued to him by SON when he registered the Bic products he now claims to be his.
“The police should investigate him because he pirated somebody’s products and the act of protesting is aimed at bringing down an Igboman who has risen to high public service.”
