Federation of Private Taxi and Car Hire Association of Nigeria, FPTCHAN, has urged the Federal Government to urgently investigate an unwarranted mob attack on the Managing Director of VIKO Travel Limited, Mr. Lucky Kanu last Friday by members of Abuja Car Hire Association of Nigeria, ACHAN, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
In a release signed and made available to the press by its National Publicity Secretary, Barrister Agbai Nnachi, FPTCHAN described the mob attack on Kanu in which he was waylaid, forcefully dragged out of his car and brutally attacked by more than 50 people in the full glare of national and foreign passengers at the airport as premeditated assassination plot.
Barrister Agbai said the unsuspecting VIKO boss was at the airport early last Friday to honour an invitation by the airport authorities on issues relating to security and that his association is highly intrigued by the fact that Kanu left the meeting only to be mob-attacked by the airport ‘taxi touts’ in order to eliminate him because of the cutting-edge innovations his company, VIKO Travel Limited, has brought to taxi operations, not just in Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, but other airports nationwide, where he has established the innovative Tourism Information Desks.
Questioning why touts should still be allowed to operate at Nigerian airports by relevant authorities, Barrister Agbai further revealed that but for the timely intervention of some Air Force and Police officers, Lucky Kanu might have been murdered in broad daylight for his selfless service to the nation which has brought world-class service delivery to Nigerian airports, boosted tourism across the country, and created thousands of jobs for Nigerian youths.
Corroborating Agbai’s statement Kanu said: “On the 19th day of February, 2016, I was informed of a security meeting at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The meeting was to hold by 10am at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT).
“Upon getting to the meeting, I observed that all the representatives of the security agencies at the Airport were represented. These included Nigeria Police Force, Air Force, DSS, FRSC, Immigration, Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, and 3 representatives of Abuja Car Hire Association of Nigeria, ACHAN.
Agbai said: “Viko Nigeria Group of Companies Limited of which Kanu is Managing Director, has a standing business contractual relationship with FAAN for car hire operations at the Airport. The operation of the company has created jobs and is still creating more jobs for our teeming unemployed citizens in Nigeria. The company’s operation has set a high standard for car hire operation at the airport which has spanned over 2 years”.
He also revealed that unlike the traditional rule of the thumb taxi services still being run by Kanu’s assailants, his company’s service runs efficiently with a GPS tracking system which enables real-time monitoring of its vehicles thereby ensuring optimal service delivery to its customers.
The association therefore charged the Federal Government and Inspector General of Police to immediately investigate the calculated attempt on the life of the VIKO MD and prosecute the perpetrators accordingly.
