Meanwhile, a four-man armed robbery gang using tricycle, ‘Keke’ opened fire on police men on stop and search operation by Umuonu Junction near Garriki, Enugu.
The incident, which happened around 1.30pm, left a policeman dead on the spot while the second policeman shot by the robbers ran way with bullet wounds but there was fear that he might not pull through.
An eyewitness account indicates that the policemen that normally mount their stop and search at that particular spot were at their duty post when the Keke passed but later reversed and opened fire on the unwary security men who ran for dear lives.
It was gathered that in the melee, the two policemen were shot with one dying at the spot whereas the second continued running with the bullet wound.
“It was like movie show. The keke passed the police checkpoint but came back and opened fire on them. To our surprise, none of the armed policemen fired back at the alleged robbers but instead scampered for safety.
“What was more, after shooting at the policemen, the robbers blocked the road and began to rob motorists and even snatched a Toyota Camry,” an eyewitness told our correspondent.
He explained that one of the fleeing policemen fell on the ground and sustained injury but continued his frightened flight.
“We saw one of the policemen fell, got up and continued to run. His uniform was soiled with blood pouring down on his face as he continued to run.
“We have never seen anything like it as policemen were fleeing from robbers instead of attacking them,” he narrates.
The police image-maker, Enugu State Police Command, Ebere Amaraizu could not corroborate the incident, as he would reply to his text message.
