Nigeria U20 team defeated hosts Senegal U20 team 3-1 in the opening match of the 2015 African Youth Championship played at the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor, Dakar, yesterday.
A brace from Taiwo Awoniyi in the opening 11 minutes of the encounter inspired Manu Garba’s side to victory with Ifeanyi Mathew getting the third for the Nigerians with Sidy Sarr pulling a goal for the hosts.
With this win, Manu Garba’s team sit atop Group A with three points plus two goals difference and will face Congo On Wednesday at the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor.
Taiwo Awoniyi and Chidera Ezeh led the Flying Eagles strike force for yesterday’s opening AYC showdown.
Both strikers featured at the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, where Nigeria clinched a record fourth championship.
Holding midfielders, Ifeanyi Ifeanyi and Akinjide Idowu with skipper Musa Muhamed and Mustapha Abdullahi were fullbacks who coverered for goalkeeper, Joshua Enaholo.
