A police officer was killed yesterday in Agbara area of Ogun state when armed robbers numbering about 40 invaded a commercial bank, using dynamites and machine guns to force their way into the bank.
The robbers, who made away with unspecified amount of money and were reportedly dressed in military uniforms, attacked the bank in the early hours of yesterday while business activities for the day was just coming to life.
The robbers, who were largely successful in their operations, however escaped through the sea before the police team arrived in the spot following a distress call by staff and some customers that were trapped in the operation.
But they abandoned two vehicles, destroyed another at the scene, while some customers and passers-by sustained injuries from gunshots.
The robbers were said to have packed all the money on the counter, and tried to blow up the Automatic Teller Machine, ATM, as they could not gain entrance to the vault because of advancing security operatives.
According to a police officer, who did not want to named, the robbers headed through a canal towards Totowu in Igando area of Lagos State, after the operation.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Prince Muyiwa Adejobi, said about 40 armed robbers succeeded in gaining entrance into only Zenith Bank by blowing up the security doors with dynamites.
“We learnt that about 40 armed robbers invaded Agbara area around 8:30 a.m. this morning. Nevertheless, our men engaged them with the Armoured Personnel Carrier.
“It was painful that one of the policemen at Zenith Bank was killed by the robbers. But some of the robbers, who later escaped through the waterways in one of the villages in the area, sustained injuries from the firepower of our men. So, anyone who sees anyone with bullet wounds should quickly contact the police.”
He said the robbers abandoned two vehicles at the scene of the incident but blew up one of them as they fled hurriedly.
