The Bauchi State government has warned teachers to brace up and face the challenge of improving the quality of education by imparting sound knowledge into their students.
Governor Muhammad Abdullahi Abubakar gave the warning yesterday at the maiden National Congress of the Old Students Association of Government Day Secondary School Shadawanka Barracks Bauchi.
Governor Abubakar who was represented by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education Alhaji Nasir Yelwa, said under the new dispensation, there should be a paradigm shift on the part of the teachers in order to revamp the lost glory of education.
He reiterated the readiness of his administration to live no stone unturned towards encouraging teachers to support their students to excel in their final examinations through the training and re-training of the teachers.
In his remark, the chairman of the occasion Professor Saminu Abdurrahman Ibrahim vice chancellor Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Bauchi, described the occasion as unique as it came when stakeholders have indicated their commitment to support the government to improve the quality of education.
Represented by Professor Fatima Tahir, the vice chancellor called on the management of GDSS Army Barracks Bauchi, to identify some influential old students of the school by inviting them to contribute towards the progress of their Alma Mata.
In a paper titled “Education is Life”, which is the school’s motto, the guest speaker at the occasion Dr. Garba Ibrahim described education as a combination of socialisation and training, preparing students for a useful, beneficial and successful life.
Dr. Garba Ibrahim, represented by Alhaji Kasim Ibrahim, while dwelling on the topic, said education should be considered as life not as the giver of life.
Also speaking, the pioneer Principal of the school Mr. Edok D Labetek who served from 1979- 1981 commended the old students for their foresight and pledged to support them with advices and share his old experience with them to achieve the desired goal.
Earlier, the interim National President of the Association Alhaji Kabiru Garba Aminu, disclosed that as part of their contributions to the school, the group has provided an inverter and a computer set to the ICT unit of the school in order to promote computer education in the school.
He called on the state government to redesign the educational system of the state so as to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
