State administrative council of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, in Bayelsa State has suspended its Ogbia Local Government Area branch chairman over allegations of embezzlement.
The suspended chairman, Comrade Victor Ebutu was said to have absconded with two months check off dues belonging to the state chapter of NULGE.
In a statement signed by its president, Comrade Akpos Ekiegha, the state administrative council after an emergency meeting on the August 26, 2016, in Yenagoa, suspended the chairman and directed him to hand over to his vice, Comrade Igoniwari Anyam.
Speaking to newsmen in Yenagoa, the state deputy president of NULGE, Comrade Toruyouyei Gowon said that the chairman was suspended for diverting money belonging to the union into his private pocket.
He said “the executive of the Nigerian Labour Congress and the state administrative council of NULGE were all here in the office waiting for him to remit the statutory 10 percent belonging to the union but he absconded.
“We made several efforts to reach him but all to no avail, even when we have been reliably informed that the said money has been paid to him. In fact, it took us two months before we could reach him and when we finally did, he could not tell what went wrong.
“So it is on this ground we suspended him for gross misconduct and insubordination, and he remains suspended until the panel of inquiry decides the next line of action we should take against him.”
Efforts to reach the suspended chairman to get his own side of the story proved abortive, as he didn’t take or return calls put to his mobile phone, neither did he reply a text message sent to him.
When contacted, the deputy chairman of the Ogbia branch, now sworn in as acting chairman, Comrade Anyam told newsmen that when the crisis that led to the suspension of his chairman began, he made effort to convince him to remit the said funds but he refused.
“I called him several times but he was insistent on not remitting the said cash. He started by claiming that the said money was still with somebody but after much pressure he confided in me that the money was with him and from all indication he had spent the money.”
