Tension is brewing among officials of Benin maximum security prison in Edo State, following the sudden disappearance yesterday morning of a notorious inmate.
The inmate (names withheld) was said to have taken off his prison uniform and took to his heels while he was deployed under the supervision of a Prison Warden to cut grass in front of the Prison Controller’s office in the Government Reservation Road, GRA.
The Warden reportedly left to eat in a nearby restaurant when the incident happened.
Nigerian Pilot reports that all prison units across the state have since received alerts even as wardens embarked on street search of the route of the escapee inmate along the Government House Golf road where the NUJ press centre, Motel Benin Plaza and the palace of the Esama of Benin are located.
The area became the prime target for the search as the inmate who was due to regain his freedom in a few days became apprehensive owing to the prolonged judicial workers’ strike that would force him to spend more time in jail.
He was said to have complained to the warden about the pains on his hands from the weeding in the past few days, more so as he was due to be freed and reportedly ran along naked and was sighted by many passersby who felt he was a lunatic.
However, the Public Relations Officer, PRO of the NPS in the state, Mr. Aminu Suleiman who confirmed the escape of the inmate said he has no details about what actually happened.
He said, “I will speak with you on this after getting information on it upon my return to the office.”
