Benue State government has dissolved the 23 local government caretaker committees and also annulled the nomination of elder brother to the immediate past governor of the state, Dr. Terkula Suswam and six others for conferment as first class chiefs.
It would be recalled that Suswam had few weeks to his exit from office ignored a court order restraining him from conferring first class chieftaincy status on six persons and went ahead to install them.
New governor of the state, Samuel Ortom in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Barr. Targema Takema, with a copy made available to Nigerian Pilot, stated that “any person or group of persons parading himself or themselves as first class chiefs in the Tiv Area Traditional Council are by this announcement urged to comply.”
The SSG added that no further action should be taken on the matter until the determination of the substantive motion before the High Court.
He therefore directed the Tiv Area Traditional Council headed by Tor Tiv, Dr. Alfred Akawe Torkura, to suspend forthwith the process of the conferment of the first class stools, maintaining that the order granted by the chief judge of the state, Justice Iorhemen Hwande, must be obeyed.
Meanwhile, the caretaker committees are by their dissolution directed to hand over to the directors general on administration of their various local governments to enhance smooth governance at the councils.
The dissolved caretaker committees were constituted two days to the just concluded governorship election in April this year.
