Benue Young Lawyers Initiative for Peace and Justice has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian Police Force, NPF, over the spate of killings in the state.
The petition, which was signed by Barristers Simon Zungwe and Monday Akor, the President and Secretary General of the initiative respectively want the police to rescue the state from looming chaos.
The group in the petition dated July 24 and also copied to the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, alleged that on Friday, July, 17 at about 10am some gunmen suspected to be hired killers invaded the construction site of an elder statesman in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, Chief Atoza Ihindan, and shot him dead.
According to the petition, “until his death, Chief Atoza was the political godfather of former governor Gabriel Suswam. He also served as chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Elders Forum in Benue North-East Senatorial District.”
The lawyers said in the month of July alone, members of the same gang suspected to have killed Atoza, committed serial atrocities in the state, particularly in Benue North-East, ranging from destruction of valuable property to kidnapping and killing of about 19 persons.
While alleging that a member of the Public Complaint Commission, PCC, in the state, Abubakar Tsav, has been partial in his investigation, they urged President Buhari to terminate his appointment so that the police can thoroughly investigate the issue.
The group said his continuous membership of the commission does not and will not do any good to indigenes of Benue State.
“We call on the president to remove Alhaji Abubakar Tsav who is serving as a Federal Commissioner representing Benue State at the Public Complaints Commission from office immediately.
“Nigeria is moving away from the ugly era of impunity and lawlessness. Therefore, no citizen irrespective of his or her status can commit barbaric crimes against humanity and go unpunished.
“We urgently call on you to conduct a painstaking investigation into the death of Chief Atoza and other persons in Benue State in order to bring the perpetrators to book and rescue the state from looming chaos.
