Immediate past Senate president, Senator David Mark, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Benue State, Dr Emmanuel Agbo, former Interior Minister, Abba Moro and scores of political leaders in the state have urged Idoma people to see the forthcoming rerun election in Benue south senatorial district as a necessary challenge to emancipate the Idoma nation from oppression.
According to a press release by the Media Assistant to Sen Mark, Paul Mumeh, and made available to Nigerian Pilot Sunday, the PDP stakeholders spoke in Otukpo, Benue State, at the weekend, when the people hosted the former Senate President to a reception, following the annulment of his election by the Appeal Tribunal in Makurdi, a couple of weeks ago.
Senator Mark was coming home for the first time after the Appeal Tribunal annulled his election.
Addressing the crowd at Mark’s Otukpo country home, the leaders expressed reservations about the Appeal Tribunal verdict but expressed confidence that another opportunity was in the offing with the forthcoming rerun, to prove that the former Senate president won the March 28, election clean and clear.
Specifically, Senator Mark urged his constituents to be calm and law abiding in their approach to the forthcoming rerun, saying “ I know that my people of Benue south are angry about the Appeal Tribunal judgement . But be calm and resolve to translate this anger into good conduct and massive vote for me in the forthcoming rerun election.
“See this forthcoming rerun polls as a challenge for our emancipation. We must not allow external forces to dictate our political destiny.
“We won the election clearly. We will win again. These are trying times, but history will judge because the mandate of the people cannot be compromised under any circumstances.
“We must also be vigilant against external forces that are bent on capitalising on the situation to divide us and weaken our collective resolve. But I know their attempts would fail because only the Idoma man can decide his future and destiny.
“We know ourselves and we know where to go when the time comes. Those who want to infiltrate our ranks should by now know that Benue south is totally a PDP home and there is no room for intruders.”
In his remarks, Dr. Agbo urged the Idoma people to remain steadfast in support of the PDP, saying the forthcoming rerun was only a temporary setback because “We have decided that Senator Mark is our light and there is no going back.”
Also speaking, former Interior Minister, Abba Moro, noted that Senator Mark remained the undisputed choice of the Idoma nation and “we will repeat the same feat in his favour anytime, any day .”
Earlier, the paramount ruler of Idoma nation, HRM, Ikoyi Elias Obekpa, told Senator Mark not to worry about the Tribunal verdict because “God and our people gave you the mandate and we have not changed or withdrawn our support for you. You remain our choice and the Idoma people will speak again when the time comes.”
Otukpo, the country home of Mark, literally stood still as citizens of all walks of life trouped out in large numbers to welcome Mark who was coming home for the first time after the Appeal Tribunal voided his election and called for rerun.
Security operatives had a hectic time controlling the huge crowd who came out to welcome Mark.
