Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has disclosed the intention of the state government to access N28 billion loan facility from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, for the payment of state and local government workers’ salary arrears.
Ortom made the disclosure yesterday at the Evangelical Church Winning All, ECWA, Pastors conference held at the Bethany Resort, Gboko, stressing that the loan was approved with single digit interest of nine percent by the Federal Government as bail out to states owing salary arrears.
The governor said N2.5 billion would be for the payment of state government workers’ salary arrears while N15.5 billion would be for local government staff.
Ortom assured that the money would be used strictly for the purpose for which it was intended, adding that repayment has been spread over several years in order to enable states to stabilize on payment of salaries.
He said, “ I’ve taken over a state with a debt burden of over N169 billion but I have the faith that God will help us to overcome this and other challenges to the glory of his name at the end of the day,” adding “I’ll leave Benue better than I found it, by the grace of God.”
