Besiktas have confirmed they will make another attempt to sign Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel in January.

Mikel has struggled to force his way into Jose Mourinho’s first-team in the last few season and is available for a transfer.

The Turkish club made a play for Nigeria international last summer, but coach Senol Gunes blocked the move.

Besiktas president Fikret Oman told the Evening Standard: “If Gunes had given the go-ahead we were going to sign Mikel (last summer), and we could enter the race again over the winter break.”
