Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria has warned the general public to be wary of quack and substandard medical laboratories in the quest for medical solutions across the country.
Chairman of the council, Dr. Lawrena Okoro, stated this recently at a press conference in Lagos.
She decried the spate of wrong diagnosis many Nigerians suffer in the hands of quacks as numerous substandard medical laboratories now exist in the country.
“We have discovered quiet a reasonable worrisome number of quacks in the state. The council’s national task force within a week in one area of Lagos sealed 28 laboratories for non-compliance to minimum standards with four cases of impersonation and outright quackery which has impacted negatively on the nation’s healthcare,” she said.
According to the chairman, one of the sealed laboratories in the Ojo area of Lagos was giving test results comparable to that of only dead persons.
“The council’s concern is on the multiplicity of unidentifiable mobile roadside laboratories that administer medical diagnoses and prescribe drugs for people without any certification and quality assurance,’’ she stressed.
She urged Nigerians to demand for the council’s approval signs and licenses from any laboratory before undergoing any diagnosis, as well as be careful of where they go for diagnosis, advising them to patronise only laboratories that partner with the council.
