In an attempt to extinct Boko Haram terror group in Nigeria and its neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger, Britain, France and the United States are billed to attend a security summit this Saturday, May 14, in Abuja.
President Muhammadu Buhari will be hosting the meeting which is the second Regional Security Summit after the first Regional Security Summit in Paris on May 17, 2014, hosted by French President Francois Hollande.
According to a statement by the special adviser to the president on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, the summit will have at the top of its agenda the successful conclusion of ongoing military operations against Boko Haram.
Last week, a briefing paper, ‘Boko Haram on the Back Foot?’ by International Crisis Group, ICG, suggested that the meeting is “an opportunity to consolidate regional and wider international cooperation” as well as review current policies; but Adesina said the summit was in furtherance of ongoing efforts by Buhari’s administration towards enhancing the security of lives, properties and investments in Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
He said Buhari and Hollande scheduled to arrive Abuja this Friday on an official visit to Nigeria, and would be joined at the summit by the presidents of Cameroon, Niger Republic, Chad and Benin Republic.
The statement revealed further that the United States, Britain, Equatorial Guinea, the European Union, ECOWAS, and the Gulf of Guinea Commission would also be represented at the summit, and that the speedy resolution of the humanitarian crises caused by the barbaric atrocities of the terrorist group will also feature prominently on the summit’s agenda.
The presidential spokesman said before proceeding to the summit, Buhari would receive Hollande and the French delegation at the Presidential Villa on Saturday morning.
According to him, it is expected that new agreements on further defence and cultural cooperation between Nigeria and France would be concluded and signed after talks between both presidents and their officials.
