Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Yusuf Buratai has said that Muslims are faced with ignorance and wrong interpretation of Islam, which gave rise to security challenges like Boko Haram insurgency.
Buratai stated this at a two-day seminar organised by Directorate of Islamic Affairs of the Nigerian Army to
enlighten and deradicalise minds of the general public on terrorism and wrong interpretation of Islam.
He urged Muslims to embrace the true teachings of Islam as propagated by Prophet Muhammad (SAW), saying anything outside that does not represent Islam.
While declaring the seminar open, the Chief of Army Staff represented by the theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Yusha`u Abubakar, said the choice of Maiduguri for the sensitisation worship was timely, due to the Boko Haram insurgency which had bedevilled the area for some time now, as a result of the wrong interpretation of Islam.
The army boss said the miscreants and criminals who were terrorising people in the North-East under the guise of Islam had gone out of the real teaching and interpretation of Islam as taught by the Prophet and his disciples, and taken the path of those trying to mislead people to the way of Satan.
The director of Islamic Affairs, Nigerian Army, Col. SG Mustapha said “despite Islamic warnings against extremism and terrorism, some people always embark on distorting the real meaning of Qur’anic verses and Hadith, disseminating wrong information on Islam in order lure ignorant Muslim youths into criminal activities in the name of fighting Jihad.”
A director in the Borno State Ministry of Religious Affairs, Alhaji Muhammed Abdullahi who represented Governor Kashim Shetttma at the occasion, said the Islamic faithful in Borno State organises prayer sessions for the Nigerian Army, so that they might triumph over the criminals who had
brought agony to the people by destroying property, killing and maiming innocent civilians in the name of Jihad.
Alhaji Abdullahi further explained that the Boko Haram insurgency and other social upheavals were as a result of bad
preaching that had gone on unchecked for over 30 years, hence the acceptance of wrong interpretation of Islam by the youth, adding that Islam was about building the society and individuals.
He said, “You don’t learn Islam on the streets or buying books from the bookshops, but through genuine scholars who understand what Islam stands for.
“We have to go back to roots to and carefully study the pure version of Islam and not the adulterated one which was adopted by these miscreants.”
In his keynote address, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai El-Kanemi represented by Barrister Wali
Idris, who is also the legal adviser to the Borno Emirate Council, thanked the military for organising such a timely seminar, as it would go a long way in sensitising people about what true Islam was all about.
