Congress, CPC, has lauded the Chief
of Defence Staff (CDS), General
Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin for
hosting a high-powered study team
from the United Kingdom Royal
College of Defence Studies (RCDS)
led by Major General Lawrence
Craig which visited Defence
Headquarters (DHQ) in Abuja
recently to under-study the Nigerian
military’s counter-terrorism strategy
in the North East, now globallyadopted
as a winning strategy
against insurgency and terrorism.
The group said that Nigeria’s
strategy that largely accounted for
the defeat of Boko Haram Terrorism
in the North East has become a
subject of robust discourse, deep
study and animating interest in top
military quarters across the world.
The group described the visit as
a welcome development in the ongoing
global quest for extensive
research and comprehensive study
on how to effectively combat
terrorism, insurgency and violent
extremism in parts of the world,
noting that the gesture by the
reputable U.K defence college could
not have come at a better time than now when the gallant and courageous
Nigerian military have proved to be a
big asset to the nation in the defeat of
Boko Haram as well as in the successful
tackling of other grave national security
threats across the country.
The group, in a joint statement
released in Abuja yesterday by its
National Coordinator, Musa Tukur
Tilde and Chief Media Strategist,
Emeka Nwakpa, expressed delight
that Nigeria’s positive contributions to
global peace and stability was again
being re-enacted and acknowledged
in influential and important quarters
across the world, saying that it was
attributable to the zeal, doggedness and
sincerity of President Muhammadu
Buhari whoseelection as President in
2015 paved the way for the emergence
of a crop of highly professional,
committed and patriotic military
service chiefs led by the CDS, General
The group praised the honesty
and sincerity of the prestigious U.K
Royal College of Defence Studies for
organizing the visit as part of its ‘Geo-
Strategic Study Tour’ to appraise and
understudy the Counter-Terrorism
Strategy of the Nigerian military
which, it said had now been officially
adopted as a major ssought-after global
winning strategy in combating Boko Haram Terrorists, ISIS, al-Shabab’s
violent extremism, militancy, religious
radicalization, violence, etc.
The group noted that the present
CDS-led Defence Headquarters has left
no stone unturned to further confirm
Nigeria’s status as a leading military
force in Africa and the sub-region as
well as ensure that the nation continued
to gain the upper hand in the anti-terror
war in the North East and check-mate
militancy and criminality in the Niger
Delta region.
According to the group, the Nigerian
military’s victory over Terrorism and
insurgency in the country had gone a
long way to significantly reduce some
of the world’s most endemic security
challenges thereby guaranteeing global
peace, order and stability, expressing
optimism that the U.K Royal Defence
Academy and similar highly-rated
defence academies will continue to
offer training programmes to more
Nigerian officers to expose them to
cutting edge military technology.
‘’We acknowledge that under the
astute leadership and grand strategy
direction of the Defence Headquarters,
our military and the other security
agencies in the country have recorded
significant victory over the Boko
Haram Terrorists who hitherto halted
socio-economic activities in the NorthEast. The crucial factor for the victory
is President Muhammadu Buhari
who diligently assembled a crack team
of tested officers who reinvigorated
the Armed Forces of Nigeria and
collaborated with the Multinational
Joint Task Force to defeat Boko
Haram,’’ Tukur Tilde said.
‘’Today, the Nigerian military under
Gen. Olonisakin and the service chiefs
have used synergy, intelligence and
information sharing to secure and
stabilize the nation to become the envy
of the world in the way it has tackled
national security threats particularly
terrorism and insurgency employing
a mix of kinetic and non-kinetic
measures to stabilize the country. They
have indeed given a good account of
The group contended that current
events had shown the present
Nigerian military as the most tried and
tested in the nation’s contemporary
history, saying that it had never been
engaged in so many internal security
operations, simultaneously combating
insurgency, terrorism, kidnapping,
militancy, cattle rustling, farmersherdsmen
clashes, pipeline vandalism,
sea robbery, illegal bunkering, ritual
killing, communal clashes, armed
cultism, etc, all of which it said were
grave threats to national stability.
Mr. Nwankpa disclosed that two
successive United States’ Presidents,
Barack Obama and Donald Trump
had applauded the Nigerian military’s
defeat of Boko Haram, noting also that
recently, the U.S Secretary of State,
Mr. Rex Tillerson recently the U.S, at a
World Conference on Global Coalition
on Terrorism in Washington attended
over 200 Chiefs of Defence Staff from
about five continents, unanimously
