• As Buhari, ACF, Saraki, others mourn

deputy=govdernorBorno State Deputy Governor, Zannah Umar Mustapha, may have died of hypertension, a problem he was seriously grappling with according to dependable family sources.
The Deputy Governor, who died in his sleep in the early hours of Saturday morning in Yola, Adamawa State while on official assignment, has been buried amidst heavy down pour, according to Islamic rites at Gwange cemetery in Maiduguri.
Family sources confirmed that Alhaji Zannah has been managing high blood pressure, stressing that he had severally travelled abroad for medical attention.
The late Deputy Governor, 49, had gone to Yola to represent Governor Kashim Shettima at the convocation ceremony of the Modibbo Adama University of Technology scheduled for yesterday, but he passed on in his sleep at his hotel room along Army Barracks Road in the city.
The body of the former deputy governor was brought back to Maidugiri, yesterday afternoon for burial by 4:00 pm, but a heavy downpour almost disrupted the funeral. Many though defied the rain to attend the burial, which was climaxed by prayer for God to grant him eternal rest.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, and many state governments have commiserated with the family, the state government and the people of Borno State.
Commiserating with the family, the entire people of Borno State and the government on the loss of Alhaji Zannah, the President prayed that Almighty Allah will receive his soul and grant him eternal rest,” according to a statement signed by his spokesman, Femi Adesina.
Similarly, the Northern Socio-cultural group, Arewa Consultative Forum, ACF, also expressed shock over the death noting that Nigeria has lost an illustrious son whose contributions in the service of the nation will forever be remembered.
A statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammad Ibrahim, described the late Alhaji Zannah Mustapha as a vibrant, young, loyal and committed politician who served his state and the people of Borno state with passion and dedication.
“With the passing away of Alhaji Zannah Mustapha, Borno state and indeed Nigeria have lost an illustrious son whose contributions in the service of the nation will forever be remembered.
“ACF hereby extends its sincere condolences to his immediate family, the good people of Biu Emirate, Governor Kashim Shettima, Government and people of Borno state over this irreparable loss.
“We pray Allah (SWT) to grant his soul an eternal rest in Aljannah Firdaus and the family the fortitude to bear this irreparable lost,” the statement reads.
Also, the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has expressed deep shock and sadness at the sudden death of Deputy Governor. Alhaji Lai Mohammed, National Publicity Secretary of the party, described Zannah’s death as a huge loss to his family, his party, his State and indeed, Nigeria. “The suddenness of Alhaji’s Zannah’s passing has deepened the pain the government on the loss of Alhaji Zannah, the President prayed that Almighty Allah will receive his soul and grant him eternal rest,” according to a statement signed by his spokesman, Femi Adesina.

In his condolence message, the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, expressed shock stressing that he was saddened by the death of the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Alhaji Zannah Umar Mustapha, noting that he still cannot imagine that he is dead because he met him one-on-one few days ago in Maiduguri, the state capital.
Conveying his shock and sadness via a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanni Onogu, in Abuja, Saraki said, “When I met Umar Mustapha in Maiduguri, he was so full of life that it could not have crossed ones imagination that we were meeting for the last time.
“He came across to me as a complete gentleman who was doing all in his power to assist his principal, Governor Kashim Shettima not only to defeat insurgency in the zone, but to bring succour to the entire people of Borno State, especially those adversely affected by the insurgency.
“It is a pity that today he is not going to witness the imminent end of the mindless bloodletting and destruction of property being visited on a peaceful and hospitable people in the North-East zone of the country.
“We can only take solace in the fact that he lived a good life and died in the service of his people. He was a complete gentleman and a devoted servant-leader. May Almighty Allah grant him a place among the righteous ones in Aljannah Firdaus”, Saraki stated through his Chief Press Secretary, Sanni Onogu, in Abuja.
He added, “Only the complete and total eradication of insurgency from every part of the North-East and other affected parts of the country can serve as a befitting tribute to this great Nigerian who has departed so soon.”
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, in a similar fashion lamented the sudden demise of the Deputy Governor stating that Mustapha’s death is a major setback for the state which is struggling to come out of the devastation as a result attacks by the Boko Haram insurgents in last five years.”
He described the late deputy governor as a pillar of support for Governor Kashim Shettima since they came into power in May 2011. “My special condolence goes to the Mustapha family. I pray God grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” Dogara stated.
Dogara recalled the late deputy governor’s lofty dreams for the insurgency-ravaged North-East. “The late Mustapha who received an award on behalf of Governor Shettima spoke passionately about our resolve and determination to rebuild, reconstruct, rehabilitate and recover the North-East through the implementation of a marshall plan by the Federal government.”
The Speaker said although Mustapha could not live to see the actualisation of the initiative, leaders from the region at all levels are determined to push for the realisation the objective.
