Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria, AMBCN, and Arewa Master Bakers Forum might be forced to either embark on strike or close businesses considering the sharp increments of ingredients price used for baking bread.
The Niger State treasurer of the association, Alhaji Lawal Mohammed Shukura made the disclosure yesterday in Minna while speaking to the press saying that the hike in the price of flour and other ingredients will surely have adverse impact on the production of bread in the country.
Shukura faulted the National body of the association that consisted of non members who were there for selfishness at the helm of affairs in acting capacity for over four years now.
He called on the Federal Government to, as a matter of necessity, intervene by subsidy as this will have serious implications on the poor masses, adding that flour mills were to effect the increment yesterday (Monday) but the distributors had gone ahead since last week.
According to him, Shukura Bread Company has no fewer than 80 staff spread across his various companies in the northern part of the company.
He further stated that flour now sells for N8,000 from N7,600, sugar from N6,500 now N9,000 while yeast from N6,500 to N10,000 noting that with the new price, they would be compelled to either sack or close their businesses.
He also intimated that Arewa Master Bankers Forum has scheduled a meeting for Kaduna on 4th February, 2016 where final decision would be taken on the matter.
Recall that Table water, popularly called pure water, now sells for N100 per bag from the previous N60 in Minna, the state capital.
