A 36-year-old bricklayer, Adewale Babalola, has been arraigned before a Lagos Chief Magistrate’s Court, Yaba, alleged unlawful carnal knowledge of a 16-year-old girl.
The accused, a resident of 11, Maxwell Ijeh Street, Aguda Surulere, Lagos, was charged before the court by the police on one Count charge unlawful sexual intercourse.
The Prosecutor, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Godwin Anyanwu, informed the court that the accused committed the offence on December 2, 2014, at his residence.
He added that the accused is a choirmaster at the above-mentioned address is a choirmaster while the victim is a chorister at Christ Our Light Glory Church, situated in Sanya, Surulere, Lagos.
The prosecutor said; “the victim told her father who is also an evangelist of the church, that the accused lured her in his room, accused forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.
“The father reported the matter to the General Overseer of the church but their was no reaction, and that the victim’s father later reported the matter at the police station”.
The prosecution informed the court that the offence is in contravention of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.
The bricklayer, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge levelled against him.
Consequently, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Soladoye order that the file be forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, DPP, for legal advice.
Soladoye however admitted bail to the accused in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to June 29 for DPP’s advice.
