Education sector topped Bauchi State’s 2016 budget with an allocation of N26.73 billion out of N135.30 billion Appropriation Bill presented to the State Assembly by Governor Muhammad Abdullahi Abubakar in Bauchi, last Thursday.
Briefing newsmen on the breakdown of the budget, over the weekend, the Permanent Secretary, Bauchi State Planning Commission, Alhaji Mohammed Ibrahim, said apart from education sector, lion shares were also given to the health, as well as road construction and infrastructure development with N19.68 billion and N14.49 billion allocations respectively.
Ibrahim said that agriculture and water resources were also accorded priority with the sum of N9.54 billion and N7.31 billion respectively.
He stated further that the sum of N7.3billion and N3.4billion were allocated to water supply and rural development which represent 5.4 and 2.5 percent, while the commerce and industry sector had the least allocation of N1.8 billion representing 1.36 per cent of the total budget.
The permanent secretary explained that the present APC administration in the state, took into consideration the major priority of the people in the budget allocation, especially where it had direct multiplier effects in every sector of the economy.
Ibrahim also informed that the state government would purchase sporting equipment as provided in the budget to further engage the youth in social activities.
He added that it was the first in the history of the state where capital expenditure was allocated N69.8 billion, representing 52 per cent of the total budget, adding that government also made provision for local and foreign scholarships for youth as well as training and retraining of teachers and recruitment of additional ones.
