House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation said it will take over the work of seven committees that failed to submit their reports on Friday by appropriating funds for the Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, that they supervise.
In a press statement, Chairman of the committee, Abdulmumin Jibrin, explained that the decision to take over the work of the committees was to meet up with the passage of the budget by the second week of March.
Jibrin hinted that so far, about 60 committees had presented their reports, adding that the remaining committees were putting the Appropriation Committee under pressure to meet up with the deadline.
He listed the committees that failed to submit their reports as directed by the House leadership as: Public Accounts Committee, PAC; Loans, Aids and Debts; Gas Resources; Public Service Matters; Maritime and Safety; Interior and National Security.
According to him, “Due to the pressure of time because we have to tidy up the final report with the Senate, the Committee on Appropriation will have to take over the work of such committees by appropriating funds for the MDAs that they supervise. In all, 60 substantive committees presented their reports and recommendations, covering improvements, shortcomings and actions to be taken in their respective MDAs.
“It is regrettable that some committees still did not meet the deadline and have not submitted any reports”.
Jibrin, however, commended the committees that had submitted their reports.
While reiterating the commitment of the National Assembly to pass the 2016 budget by the second week of March, he maintained that it was for the overall interest of the nation.
Nigerian Pilot recalls that after 12 hours of grilling, the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, last week Friday, formally closed the collation of reports on the 2016 budget from standing committees of the House (sub-committees to the Committee on Appropriation).
During Thursday’s plenary, Speaker Yakubu Dogara had directed chairmen of all the standing committees to submit and defend their MDAs budget within 24 hours or risk zero budget for 2016.
It was gathered that out of the 97 standing committees inaugurated by the speaker, only 15 (as at Thursday) had submitted and defended their budget before the committee.
