Contrary to expectations of most Nigerians prior to the signing of the 2016 appropriation bill by President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigerians are of the opinion that implementation of the budget is the key to bringing the country out of the doldrums, and not the fanfare that accompanied the signing.
According to some Abuja residents that spoke to Nigerian Pilot, they are of the view that lack of a working budget by the MDAs for the past few months has really slowed things down in the country. Mr. Uchenna Godwin said, “except you are not living in this country, people have been complaining bitterly, nothing seems to be working, you can’t meet anybody for financial assistance at this hard time as what you hear is pathetic stories worse than yours”.
Another resident, Abraham John said: “it’s not about their signing of the budget, it is for them to implement the budget so that Nigerians can feel the impact of the so much advertised ‘change’ which we are yet to see. The challenges Nigerians are facing are so compounded that one wonders if the Government has a working agenda; no fuel, no electricity, foods are costly in the market and transportation fare is on the increase”.
It would be recalled that since the presentation of the budget proposal by the President to the National Assembly, it’s been series of drama; from budget padding to the reluctance of the National Assembly to send the details of the budget proposal to the President to append his signature.
