President Muhammadu

Buhari has congratulated former

President, Chief Olusegun

Obasanjo, as he turns 79 years old

today.

Also, Buhari has paid tribute

to renowned scholar and elder

statesman, Professor Eskor Toyo,

who will be laid to rest today,

describing him as a role model

whose guiding principle was

to live for the good of the less

privileged people.

The President, in the

congratulatory message issued

in Abuja yesterday by the

president’s Special Adviser on

Media and Publicity, Mr Femi

Adesina, said that Obasanjo

contributed, “immensely to the

institutionalisation of democracy

in Nigeria and Africa through his

personal sacrifice, extensive local

and international networks, and

God-given wisdom.’’

President Buhari maintained

that Chief Obasanjo’s place in

global history was assured for

successfully handing over power

to a civilian government in 1979

after serving as a military Head

of State.

According to the president,

Obasanjo, who is approaching the

octogenarian cycle, returned to

power in 1999 through elections to

stabilise the polity, during which

“he most remarkably negotiated a

debt relief for Nigeria’’.

President Buhari prayed that

the Almighty God would grant

the Balogun of the Owu lineage,

who is also the Ekerin Balogun

of the Egba clan, long life and

strength to continue his service to

humanity.

On Prof Toyo, Buhari believes

that he will be long remembered

as a fearless advocate who never

stopped confronting the problems

of social injustice, discrimination

and poverty in Nigeria.

President Buhari affirms that

with his tireless efforts and

advocacy on many issues central

to the prosperity of Nigeria,

including social justice, human

rights and the war against

corruption, Prof. Toyo has left a

most worthy and commendable

legacy for other patriotic

Nigerians to build upon.

The President trusts that Prof.

Toyo will be eternally honoured

and celebrated for his life-long

commitment to a better Nigeria

and Africa, and as a fountain

of knowledge who was a great

mentor and role model to his

students and admirers.

President Buhari extends

heartfelt condolences to Prof.

Toyo’s family, the government

and people of Akwa Ibom state.

He prays that God will grant

Prof. Toyo’s soul eternal rest and

comfort his family, friends and

admirers.
