KNOWN FOR his style of keeping a long silence over biting economic and political challenges faced in the country, President Muhammadu Buhari has finally admitted that Nigerians are truly hungry. Spokesman of the President, Femi Adesina, stated recently in Abuja that the President was actually aware of the hunger and hardship in the land and guaranteed that his government was doing everything possible to mitigate the poverty ‘The President feels about it and says it will be temporary,’ Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina has said, adding that he was not unmindful of the hardship faced by Nigerians but assured that it will be over soon. “Recently when I visited the President at the Villa, precisely last weekend I explained to him the feelings of Nigerians, particularly the hunger, hardship in the land and he expressed concern and admitted that he knew what the people were passing through but that things will soon be better.” Adesina who spoke at a Silverbird TV Programme ‘’Tracking the President’’ in Abuja, explained that the current All Progressives Congress, APC ,administration under President Muhammadu Buhari had the capacity to solve the diverse problems presently faced in the country. “Definitely we will get there: APC has capacity to solve diverse problems in the life time of this administration”, the President’s senior media aide assured, noting that Nigerians will be glad that they voted President Buhari and the APC. He stated that the government was serious about diversifying the economy arguing that much has been done in the areas of Solid Minerals and Agriculture. According to him until oil dries up government will continue to raise taxes from it but will not depend solely on it as a major revenue earner. Adesina further explained that much of the federation account recent earning was from taxes from other sources. ‘Tax from other sources accounted for so much in the last federation account allocation,” he said. It will be recalled that experts and influential Nigerians have continued to slam the Buhari administration over its insensitivity to the hardship faced by Nigerians.
Some picked holes in the administration’s economic policies while others say the government does not have any blueprint or policy to improve the economy. Top among Buhari’s critics are former Governor of Nigeria Apex bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanuis and some experts. In a recent statement, the monarch lambasted the Buhari administration for allegedly creating criminal portfolio billionaires through forex subsidies. “We created billionaires from oil subsidies in the past. We are making the same mistakes with Forex subsidies. ”As an Emir, I can sit in my garden and make a phone call to access $10 million at N197 per dollar then sell it off at nothing less than N300, with just a phone call, I’m making a profit of over a billion naira. “That is what people are doing now and any system that allows you sit in your garden and make a billion naira without investing a kobo is a wrong system,” he cautioned.
