Elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai, has said that the renewed killings in Borno, Yobe, and Plateau States by Boko Haram sect, had shown that President Muhammadu Buhari, has no ready-made solution to the problem of insurgency in the country.
He said the sect was using the killings to say that the President, a retired four-star General, would not make any difference in the anti-terrorism campaign.
insuregncyIn an exclusive interview with Nigerian Pilot, the Northern Elders Council, NEC chairman, said that Boko Haram are telling Nigerians that though President Buhari is an experienced and retired Army General, it does not make any difference.
He said that the election of Buhari does not mean an end to the activities of the Boko Haram sect.
According to him, “What is happening now is clear that Boko Haram sect is telling Nigerians that although President Buhari was a four-star General, he is not seen differently from other Generals before him, who were used to confront the insurgents.
He said: “So, what they are saying now is that there is no difference, whether Buhari is a retired four-star General and they will deal with him in the same way as they dealt with other former Presidents.
“Therefore, the election of Buhari as President as far as Boko Haram sect is concerned, will not make any difference. And that is what they are telling Nigerians. Because since the election of Buhari till date, Boko Haram has carried out its mayhem in different places and they have killed hundreds of people. And it makes no difference between the regime of Buhari and his predecessors. Till today, the Chibok girls are not found. Even with the collaboration of our neighbouring states, we are yet to get Shekau and clear Sambisa Forest, which is their headquarters. And therefore I think the country should be more prepared for a very long time to get results in the fight against the terrorists.
“Fighting insurgency is different from fighting a conventional war. We’ve seen how the United States of America spent years in fighting terror and with the deployment of thousands of arm forces, fighting aircraft, helicopters and tanks, the Americans were yet to defeat those terrorists. The same is happening in Syria and Iraq as well as Somalia. Somalia attacks have been on for more than 20 years. Even with the involvement of the African Union, military intervention, they are yet to be overcome the menace.
“So, Nigerians should not expect a quick victory in this matter because of change in government. Agreed that we could succeed in a few areas in the next one week; it will be naïve for us to think that a mere change of the President will make all the difference because the President, whether a past military officer or civilian, does not go to the war front. He only provides equipment for the men to fight the war,” Yakassai stated.
