Barring any change, President Mohammadu Buhari will on October 2 host victorious Nigerian Athletes that made the country proud at the concluded African Games held in Congo Brazzaville.
The Commander in Chief of Armed Forces will equally honour Nigeria’s D’ Tigers who for the first time in history emerged overall winners of African Basketball Championship otherwise known as Afrobasket and automatically qualified to be in 2016 Olympic games in Rio De Janeiro.
Nigerian Pilot Sports exclusively gathered from the National Sports Commission, NSC, at the weekend that already the leadership of the commission has sent out a letter to the Presidency suggesting that October 2 date would be apt since the country will equally be in the celebration mood.
A very senior official in the NSC who confided with our correspondent said though a confirmation letter was yet to be seen, the commission was optimistic that the idea would sail through.
“All I’m sure is that the President will host the athletes and D’ Tigers at the same time in the Presidential Villa. And we expect him to honour to serve as encouragement for the future. The date is not yet confirmed but is likely to be on October 2,” he added
D’ Tigers were earlier scheduled to be hosted immediately after their exploits in Angola but was postponed due to enable full concentration on the African Games which ended at the weekend in Congo.
The country’s senior national team surprisingly upstaged defending champions and host Angola to become victorious.
This year’s basketball tournament which was held in Angola last month has been the most prestigious basketball event in the continent and D’ Tigers have thrice come close to winning it but didn’t succeed in the past.
Also, Nigeria’s performance at African games was said to have surpassed previous outings in recent times.
