President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed sadness over the news of the passing away of the first civilian governor of Delta State, Chief Felix Ibru.
On behalf of the federal government, President Buhari extended condolences to the Ibru family, the Urhobos whom he led for many years as president-general of the Urhobo Progressive Union, the people of Delta State and Chief Ibru’s friends and associates across Nigeria.
“The president joins them in mourning the late governor and distinguished senator who made remarkable contributions to the progress and development of Nigeria during his long career as an illustrious architect, businessman, politician, community leader and philanthropist.
“President Buhari urges all who mourn Chief Ibru to take solace in the awareness of his much fulfilled life of great accomplishments and give thanks to God Almighty for the indelible legacies which the late governor has left behind for his heirs and successors to build on,” a statement by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, read in part.
He prayed that God Almighty would receive Chief Ibru’s soul and grant him eternal rest.
Meanwhile, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has commiserated with the family of first civilian governor of Delta State and former senator representing Delta Central senatorial district, Olorogun Felix Ovuodoroye Ibru, over the death of the former governor.
Okowa in a statement signed by his chief press secretary, Ehiedu Aniagwu, yesterday described the late Senator Ibru as a patriot and political icon who led the state in her embryonic stage.
Continuing, the governor said Senator Ibru would be missed by all whose lives he had touched in many diverse ways in his very fulfilled and achievements-laden life.
He described Senator Ibru as a renowned politician, businessman and a highly revered octogenarian and among the very special people who made very significant and indelible contributions to their countries and humanity.
Okowa joined his family, friends, associates and fans across the world in mourning the exit of a legend and in giving thanks to God Almighty for his glorious life of service to Delta State, Nigeria and mankind at large.
“On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I mourn the exit of a legend, political titan and first civilian governor of Delta State, Olorogun Felix Ovuodoroye Ibru.
“Senator Ibru’s life-long dedication and indefatigable commitment to serving the people of Delta State as well as the Urhobos worldwide where he served them meritoriously as Senator and as President of the Urhobo Progress Union, UPU, will be missed.”
The governor assured the Ibru family that the former governor would always be celebrated and honoured by his proud countrymen, women and children for his unblemished service and exemplary career, which had inspired others to take up a life of selfless service to humanity.
