President Muhammadu Buhari has been advised to establish zonal offices of the Cadastre Mining Office across Nigeria to encourage proper grassroots participation in legal mining activities as a way to further diversify the nation’s economy.
National President of Integrity Network Initiative, INI, Comrade Dominic Ogakwu gave the advice while submitting the assessment report of his group to the management of the agency in Abuja, recently.
“We call on General Buhari to establish zonal offices to further encourage more grassroots participation as way of diverting attention from crude oil to the mining of solid mineral,” he said.
Ogakwu affirmed that if the mining sector was properly managed, it would create jobs, calm insurgency, pipeline vandalism, oil bunkering, kidnapping and other social ills that have bedeviled the nation and open up the economy to more foreign investors.
Applauding the management of the agency under the leadership of the director general, Engr. Mohammed Amate, he said the endorsement of the administration was premise on the group’s independent assessment on the modus operandi of the Mining Cadastre Office in Abuja.
National president of the civil society group said administrative transparency and excellence of the management in the day-to-day running of the agency was worth emulating by other Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs.
Receiving the report, Amate appreciated the group for conscientiously committing its effort and time to inquire into the operations of the office and called for more collaboration.
Amate said the Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office was the best in Africa and way ahead of other countries in the continent, but lamented its current challenge of inadequate funds despite generating over a billion naira annually.
He, however, commended President Buhari for listing the mining sector as one of the major priority areas of his administration and called on local and foreign investors to take advantage of the huge value chains that exist in the mining industry.
