Paramount ruler of Torukongo community in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State, Chief John Ochi has described President MuhammaduBuhari’s appointments so far as lopsided and in favour of the north.
Speaking to journalists in Port-Harcourt, he said: “If you look at President Buhari’s appointments so far, over 90 percent are from the north. This is unfair. Imagine appointing a retired army officer to head Customs and Excise when ordinarily, Atteh- a Niger Deltan, should have emerged as the head of customs. This is unfair,” he stated, adding that “if this does not change, we will be forced to take drastic actions.”
Ochi, who is also the president of the Concerned Youths of the Niger Delta and founder of Torukongo foundation, attributed the problems in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to lack of internal democracy in the party, which he said made people to force their choices on the masses.
He also stated that those who really worked to bring the party to power ended up as beggars.
The traditional ruler also commented on the former Niger Delta agitator, Comrade Ateke Tom, saying that he was totally innocent of all the allegations of violence levelled against him when the APC gubernatorial candidate, Hon. Dakuku Peterside, came to campaign in Okrika.
“All these are just attempts to spoil his image. Without him (Ateke) no PDP in Rivers State. He has done a lot to boost the image of the Niger Delta.
Today, he is taking care of the orphans, widows and several others that even local government chairmen and commissioners cannot do,” he said.
Ochi maintained that northerners were the only friend the Niger Delta people had since they released Adaka Boro from jail and helped to liberate Port Harcourt from the Igbo during the war.
“Northerners gave us NAFCON, petrochemical company, NLNG and refinery phase II; but today they have all been sold off with the exception of the NLNG and refinery which was sold; but the late Yaradua refused it,” he stated.
Ochi wondered why the sale of these companies running into billions was not probed by President Muhammadu Buhari, only for him to be probing only the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.
