President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday instructed the Senate that the vice president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo would act on his behalf as president while he is away in the United Kingdom for a 10-day medical vacation.
In a letter addressed to the Senate president, Senator Bukola Saraki, Buhari said he was writing in compliance with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
According to the letter, the president will be away for 10 days. He left the country yesterday, June 6, and is expected back to Nigeria next week, June 16, 2016.
The letter read: “In compliance with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, I wish to inform the Distinguished Senate that I will be away on a short medical vacation from 6th-16th of June, 2016, and while I am away, the vice president (Osinbajo) will perform the functions of my office. Please, accept, as always, assurances of my highest esteemed consideration.”
It would be recalled that Buhari had last week visited the Aso Villa Clinic, where he was treated for an undisclosed ear infection. But the presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina had, however, claimed that the president was hale and healthy, thereby casting doubts on the rumours.
Adesina, however, made a u-turn last Sunday, when he admitted that Buhari had an ear infection and would therefore travel to the United Kingdom for a 10-day medical vacation.
