Confederation of African Football (CAF) have confirmed Nigeria have replaced injured Isaac Success with Victor Osimhen on their final squad to the U23 AFCON, which begins in Senegal today.
Osimhen did not make coach Samson Siasia’s final for the U23 championship, which also doubles as a qualifier for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
However, following injury to Success, 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup record-breaking top scorer Osimhen was drafted to replace the Granada of Spain striker.
According to CAF, Nigeria as well as Group B rivals Egypt and Mali have made changes to their final squads.
“The changes were done in accordance with Article 66.2 of regulations of the tournament which states that a player on the final list cannot be replaced unless seriously injured at the latest 24 hours at least before the beginning of the first match of his team.
“The CAF medical committee must approve his substitution in writing, after reception and approval of a detailed medical certificate.
“CAF medical committee shall write a certificate attesting that the wound is sufficiently serious to prevent the player from participating at the U-23 AFCON and submit this certificate to the organizing committee for approval…”
