Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that he has no intention of returning to the factionalised People’s Democratic Party, PDP, which is also gasping for breath.
Obasanjo, who reiterated his stand on quitting partisan politics, said he quit the party when it was alive and ‘seemingly united,’ adding that the news of his appearance at a PDP meeting in Abuja on Friday was targeted at getting him annoyed and embarrassed.
The former President, who was reacting to photo news which went viral on the internet on his appearance at Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre in Abuja on Friday, said he was at the Centre for a different mission entirely.
Obasanjo, in a press statement signed by his media aide, Kehinde AKinyemi, a copy of which was electronically made available to our correspondent, said whoever believed the news would believe that his/her mother was not a woman.
According to the statement, the former President said he was at the Center on the invitation of the Commodities Association Stakeholders on the Zero Hunger Nigeria event and left the venue immediately after the meeting.
Obasanjo explained that immediately after his arrival at the venue, some people who he later recognised as politicians walked up to him to greet him and that he joked with them that they were gate crashers and invaders.
According to him, anybody hoping to drag him back to politics would fail like any man feeding mice to a dead cat.
The statement read in part, “The attention of the former President, His Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has been brought to the photonews story, which has gone viral on the social media on Friday, August 5, 2016 of his purported being “spotted” at a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) event at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre, Abuja.
“While ordinarily his first reaction to the news was that those behind it targeted to get him annoyed and embarrassed, his conclusion was that he has told the world that he has quit partisan politics and that is final. Anybody hoping to drag him back will fail like any man feeding mice to a dead cat.
“Those who know me know that I have publicly announced my quitting partisan politics and those who will believe the purported story will believe anybody who tells him that his or her mother is not a woman.
“If I quit a party when it was alive and seemingly united, how could I go back to a now divided, factionalised party gasping for breath?.”
Obasanjo further said, “On the invitation of the Commodities Association Stakeholders, His Excellency, was invited to the “Zero Hunger Nigeria” event at the Centre. The meeting commenced but few minutes into the session, his attention was drawn to the presence of some people walking up to where he was seated.
At closer glance, he recognised them to be politicians and they exchanged pleasantries, saying they came to greet him and they walked out again from the meeting. The former President cracked joke with them calling them “invaders and gate crashers”.
“The programme ended and immediately he and his entourage headed back to Lagos. He was barely hours in Lagos when he started receiving calls from both far and near, wanting to find out about his presence at a political party programme in Abuja.”
The former President described the photo news as height of irresponsible journalism and mischievous, adding that a responsible journalist would have gone further to ascertain his actual destination at the Centre.
Obasanjo, however, called for investigation and sanction of the journalists involved in the news, stating that such will serve as deterrent to others.
