No fewer than 10 Yansakai members are feared dead following confrontation with suspected cattle rustlers at Fadamar Bika village in Bungudu Local Government area of Zamfara State midweek.
Yansakai, a volunteer group confronted the rustlers following the latter’s incessant raid on their cattles as well as vandalisation of the farm lands of members of the community.
According to a resident of Bungudu town, who pleaded anonymity in a telephone call, the Yansakai group had trailed the suspected cattle rustlers in the forest, seized some rustled cattles from them and returned to the town.
However, the rustlers mobilized, ambushed and inflicted heavy casualty on the Yansakai members killing 10 of them.
The Yansakai have been in the increase following persistent destruction of their homes and farmlands by Fulani herdsmen.
The members have consistently called on the Zamfara State government to address the problem of armed bandits even as others have appealed to the government to step in and control the activities of the Yansakai group and stop them from constituting a nuisance to the society subsequently.
When contacted, the Zamfara State Police Commissioner Mr Olufemi David Ogunbayode confirmed the incident, stating that the command had already deployed special anti- crime troops to the area to restore normalcy.
He called on vigilantes and Yansakai members in the state to avoid taken laws into their hands while discharging their duty, and urged them to always cooperate with the police in their effort to fish out criminals in the state.
