CHELSEA are closing in on signing 21-year-old Augsburg defender Baba Rahman.
The return of Filipe Luis to Atletico Madrid after just one season at Stamford Bridge means Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is in the market for a replacement at left back.
Nothing has been agreed between Chelsea and Augsburg, but the Bundesliga club have been holding out for at least £15million from the Barclays Premier League champions.
There have been reports that Chelsea submitted a $25m (£17.5m) bid for Rahman, but Sportsmail understands negotiations are still ongoing.
Chelsea previously had Manchester City and Arsenal as competition to sign Rahman, who has 11 caps for Ghana, but west London remained the most likely destination throughout the summer.
The starlet was signed by Augsburg for just £1m from Greuther Furth last year and Rahman’s agent, Sascha Empacher, told The Guardian: ‘Both clubs are still working on fine-tuning but we hope the agreement will be finalised soon.’
Luis arrived at Chelsea for £16m last summer but failed to break into Mourinho’s side. Despite making his mark as a leading left back in Madrid, Cesar Azpilicueta was preferred to the Brazilian.
