An outbreak of cholera has killed five persons and hospitalised several others in Kankia local government area of Katsina state.
Nigerian Pilot learnt the victims lost their lives after drinking contaminated water from ponds which were main sources of water in the area.
It was gathered that, after drinking the contaminated water, the victims started vomiting and developing diarrhea, with some five of them losing their lives before reaching hospital.
Our correspondent, who visited Kankia general hospital, reports that several people had reported to the hospital with cases of the disease and were receiving treatment as at yesterday afternoon.
It was learnt that the victims hailed from Layin Hayin Alahassan, Nasarawa, Kurashi, and Tafashiya villages.
Reacting, the Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Health, Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Qabasiyyu said government has taken measures to stop the spread of the disease.
Qabasiyyu however said two people were confirmed to have lost their lives while a team of health officers were sent to the villages to compile a report on the outbreak of the disease.
