Nigerian-born Obinna Maduike is making waves in Europe in the coaching profession. Last year he was employed as the coach of Derby, a Club in English Championship’s under-18 side. He doubles as the under-13 coach of Derby. Maduike, has not forgotten to follow developments in his home country’s football. In a recent interview with the Nigerian Pilot Sports he hailed the Super Eagles for their impressive outings so far in the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifying campaigns especially their 3-1 thrashing of the highly rated Fennecs of Algeria.
He described the Super Eagles victory over Algeria last Saturday in a Group B 2018 World Cup tie in Uyo as a very promising development which should be sustained until they make it to Russia World Cup Finals.
According to the Derby County coach, “there is a lot of promise in the present Nigerian team. The players are quite youthful and committed. They want to excel and they are committed to it. They are not playing for what they stand to gain, but they want to make name for themselves.” He said it was quite a thrilling development that despite the higher rating of Algeria over Nigeria in the FIFA rankings, the Eagles rose to the occasion to prevail over the invaders from North Africa.
Maduike similarly commended the squad’s captain, John Mikel Obi, for displaying unparalleled patriotism, and leadership qualities in the team, which he said is a key factor in the Eagles’ successful outings so far.
“ Obi sacrificed his club’s duties to enable him participate in the Rio 2016 Olympics for Nigeria ; and through his efforts and those of his colleagues, they won the only medal for the country[bronze] at Rio. In the Super Eagles, he is the game changer.” Coach Obinna spoke glowingly about the Eagles’ Franco-German tactician, Genot Rohr for bringing sanity to the national team. He said employing him at this point in time was one of the best decisions made by the present NFF.
The England-based coach urged the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, to also live up to its responsibility by ensuring that the momentum among the team is maintained. Coach Maduike said they should ensure that the team’s requirements are met before during and after their games.
He also advised the Eagles “not to allow the Nigerian factor set in in their remaining matches by resting on their oars. They should learn to manage success by ensuring that they consolidate on their victories so far.
