Akwa Ibom state Government has warned members of the public against the consumption of poisonous meat being sold in the state, saying it portends great risk to human health.
The meat which has been on sale for the past four months in the state is being imported into the country from Europe to the state through an intermediary whose identity is still unknown to the authorities.
Briefing newsmen on the matter in Uyo weekend, Commissioner of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Godwin Afangideh, said the state government has taken proactive measures to rid markets in the state of the sale of the poisonous meat.
Afangideh, who spoke through his Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Obot Obot said the Ministry on discovery of the sale of the meat in the state has embarked on sensitization campaigns in all local and urban markets.
“The state government through the Veterinary Services Directorate of the Ministry has embarked on a sensitization campaign to some markets in some of the local governments.
“The sensitization which was led by a veterinary officer in the Ministry went from one market to another talking to people on the imperatives to watch out for toxic meat following reports of its importation into the country.” Obot said.
He advised the public on the need to take adequate care of their body by watching what they eat and drink, stressing that a likely cause of most untimely deaths could be as a result of the consumption of such toxic food.
Speaking on efforts being made by the Ministry to fish out those behind the importation of the meat, the Director said the matter has been handed over to the SSS.
‘’We are on their trail, you know it’s largely the work of the SSS. Our efforts in this regards has not been successful. These people work through a powerful intermediary. The worse scenario is that they don’t have a warehouse where they can be traced to”.
Meanwhile fear of outbreak of cancer, liver cirrhosis and other dangerous diseases has gripped residence of the state following the discovery.
Thousands of those who patronize the meat, it was gathered, are likely to be exposed to serious health conditions such as diarrhea, hypertension, cancer and liver problem due to high quantity of salt used for its preservation and abnormal growth in the body
The skin meat which is five times thicker than ordinary skin meat is injected with a toxic substance called formalin used for its preservation.
