Conference of former speakers, states House of Assembly, yesterday said it has commenced move to get life pension for its members.
Chairman of the conference, Honourable Friday Itulah, disclosed this to House Press Corps while giving insight into the activities of the body.
Itulah argued that it was not out of place to provide pension for former speakers considering their enormous contributions to the development of democracy in the country.
He emphasized that if the President and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN should be entitled to life pension, they should also be entitled to such benefits.
The chairman expressed worry over the gale of impeachments across the country, adding that the body had step in to address the frequent removal of principal officers in state assemblies.
Itulah hinted that they will strengthen the law so that it would be difficult for a speaker to be removed.
Secretary of the conference, Hon. Onawo Ogoshi, said there was need for them to always stand together and speak with one voice so that Nigerians will take them seriously.
The body, recently registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, is scheduled to pay a courtesy call to one of its own and governor-elect for Plateau state, Simon Lalong tomorrow.
Lalong was one of the governors elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC during the April 11 gubernatorial election.
