Ogun State chapter of Peoples Democratic Democratic Party, PDP, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ogun State council, have declared confidence in Ogun State Independent National Electoral Commission conducting a free and fair local government election in the state.
The NUJ and PDP Chairman, Wole Sokunbi and Sikirullahi Ogundele respectively said this yesterday during a stakeholders forum on the elections.
The event which was held at the NUT hall in Kuto, Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital was organised by the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR.
While delivery his speech, the Chairman of NUJ said the union has absolute confidence in the electoral body at conducting free, fair, credible and acceptable local government election.
Shokunbi said the composition of OGSIEC with two retired permanent secretaries is enough to have confidence on the Commission.
He said, “For us, we have absolute confidence in OGSIEC because if you look at the composition, they are people of impeccable character.
“In the composition are two retired permanent secretaries and we are confident they will conduct a free, fair and acceptable election.”
He appealed to the security operatives to take care of the journalists that would be covering the election while assuring all stakeholders of right of place in the media.
In his own speech, the Chairman of PDP said the party doesn’t have an iota of doubt on the free, fair and credible election because of the character of the Chairman, Alhaja Risikatu Ogunfemi.
Ogundele also allayed the fear of security operatives saying, the political parties would conduct themselves on the day of the election.
He said, “I don’t have a doubt in my mind that the election would be free and fair because of the Chairman who is a credible person.
“I want to allay the fear of security operatives, Ogun State is an elitists and peaceful state, we’ve done election before and I can assure you of hitch free election in the state.”
Earlier, Alhaja Ogunfemi said, so far, the Commission has promised a level playing field to all parties.
According to her, those who were disqualified on the basis of falsification of documents, underage, etc, were shown the reason for their disqualification.
