Confusion broke out in Kemta Idi-Aba area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, in the early hours of yesterday, when a passenger jerked and died inside a commercial vehicle.
Nigerian Pilot learnt that the passenger, who was later identified as Michael Hogan, boarded the taxi from Odeda in Odeda Local Government Area of the state to Abeokuta, but was discovered to have died at Iyana in Abeokuta.
It was further gathered that the deceased, who has been suffering from an undisclosed ailment, was on his way to an Abeokuta to consult a herbal drug vendor.
It was also gathered that the driver was shocked when the passenger could not alight from the car when he got to his destination.
He reportedly raised an alarm which attracted fellow drivers and passersby to the scene of the incident while fear-stricken members of the public flee as the driver too momentarily abandoned his taxi and took to his heels.
After he was encouraged, the driver summoned courage and reported the case at Kemta – Idi Aba Divisional Police headquarters, Kemta.
But another confusion ensued at the police station as the police quickly locked up the driver and also struggled to curtail the crowd that besieged the station in order to have a glimpse of the situation.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident adding that the family of the deceased has been traced and claimed that the deceased has been ill for a while.
Adejobi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police(DSP), said the Police would soon release the corpse to the family for burial as requested after due process are followed and neccessary things carried out by the Police.
He said, “The family said Hogan left home early in the morning for Abeokuta to collect herbal remedies not knowing that would be his end.
“The police will soon release the corpse to the family for burial as requested after due process must have been followed.”
