Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Merit award in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Prince Edet Samuel has decried fraud in the recent 2014/2015 batch C award of excellence to corps members.
Mr. Edet told Nigerian Pilot that the selection of winners of the 2015 award was inappropriate, adding that adherence to the criteria set by the scheme had been marred by corruption, favouritism and other factors.
He alleged that NYSC staff connived with parents and other interest groups to erode the very purpose of the service programme’s criteria.
He said that for a corps member to be qualified for an award, he/she needed to have distinguished himself/herself in all the four cardinal phases of the service year which include; orientation’s primary assignment, the secondary assignment or Community Development Service and the winding and passing out activities.
He noted that the award which was instituted in 1974 by the scheme was to recognise and reward excellence in behaviour and performance amongst the corps members, which he said was not the case in the FCT for the selection of awardees.
