It was a bloody evening in Oke Oda in Yewa South Local Government Area
of Ogun State where a couple, two children and one other person lost
their lives during a clash between men of the Nigeria Custom Service
clashed with smugglers.

It was gathered that the Customs officials pursued some suspected
smugglers who invaded the area with two vehicles loaded of rice coming
from Igolo, a border town between Nigeria and Benin Republic while
heading towards Sango in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun

Eye witness account had it that the Customs officials seized the
vehicles and were driving them to Idi-Iroko office before they were
ambushed by some suspected smugglers.

It was gathered that the smugglers had earlier blocked the road to
prevent the officers from accessing their root and that the police
from the other side were contacted to clear the road.

After the arrest, it was further gathered that the officers reportedly
called for reinforcement who started shooting to rescue their
colleagues but resulted in the death of five people while others were

Both the state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi and his
counterpart with Customs, Usman Abubakar, confirmed the incident but
said only two people died.

Abubakar said three of their officers sustained injury during the
attack by the smugglers, adding that three of their check points were
also burnt down.

He said, “Two people have been confirmed dead. Our officers were
attacked by smugglers on their way to Idi-Iroko office after seizing
two vehicles loaded with rice at Ajilete.

“These smugglers carried guns, cutlasses, axe, broken bottles and
stoned our officers with a view to recovering their vehicles with the
contraband and injured three officers.

“We had to call for reinforcement of Military and Police before we
could escape from the smugglers; they burnt down three of our check

Adejobi also reported that two casualties were recorded in the crisis
and that the alleged mastermind of the incident identified as Oke
Gbenro has been arrested.

The Police who have taken over the matter said “As at now, we have
recorded two people confirmed dead and we have taken the corpses to a
morgue for autopsy and for proper investigation.”
