High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja, sitting in Gudu District has sentenced four armed robbers to death.
Presiding judge, Justice Abubakar Talba, in a judgement yesterday agreed with the prosecutions that the four suspects were guilty of criminal conspiracy and armed robbery and therefore sentenced the accused to death by hanging.
The judgement was in accordance with section 6 (b) and 1(2) of the Robbery and Firearms Special Provisions Act CAP R11 LFN 2004.
The condemned robbers are Ikechukwu Eze (34), Emmanuel Egwaje (26), Chiwendu Igwe (32) and Evans Ebizue (32).
Nigerian Pilot gathered that the suspects were arrested by the FCT Police Command in 2006 for conspiring together to commit felony to wit, armed robbery, and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 5(b) of the Robbery and Firearms Special Provisions Act CAP R11 LFN 2004.
The prosecution counsel and officer in charge of the legal section of the FCT Police Command, CSP Simon Lough, during trial, called 8 witnesses, who testified against the suspects.
In the amended 6-count charge, CSP Lough said the suspects committed the crime in Bwari Area Council secretariat on September 7, 2006, during which the suspects, using guns and other offensive weapons, robbed one David Tanko of 2 handsets and Bwari Area Council of N2.658 million, which was kept in the cash office at the council secretariat.
The four were also accused of house breaking and theft, shooting a police officer, one CSP Rabiu Sabiu on the leg with such intention and under such circumstance that if by that act caused the death of the officer.
In his judgement, Justice Talba held that the prosecution proved his case beyond reasonable doubt that the suspects are robbers and therefore condemned them to death by hanging.
