Five suspected killers of a Kano based Igbo trader, Mrs. Bridget Agbaheme, have been remanded in prison custody till July 20 for ruling on their bail application.
Defence counsel, Barrister Gambo AbdulSalam had filed application asking the court to set free, the high profile suspects, stressing that the First Information Report, FIR, by the Police does not constitute charges in the eyes of the law, arguing that FIR is simply an allegation and not sufficient to hold on to somebody, “in other words, FIR amount to nothing but just an information.
He therefore asked the court to grant bail to the suspects, as he opposed the police demand to take them back into custody for more investigation.
The sitting in Kano which was conducted under tight security attracted crowd of sympathizers across the divides.
In his application, the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Ekwe Sunday also requested the court not to grant the suspects bail adding that, “releasing the suspects would jeopardize the case”.
The matter was therefore adjourned to July 20th for ruling on the bail application, as the presiding Magistrate, Mohammed Jibril directed the suspects to be remanded in prison.
