A Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday, remanded in prison custody a 32-year-old carpenter, Sunny Jacob, charged with stealing five planks.

Jacob, a resident of New Kuchigoro Village, Abuja, was arraigned on a charge of stealing before Justice Garba Ogbede.

Ogbede refused to take Jacob’s plea and ordered that he should be remanded in Kuje Prison till April 6 for further hearing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Ndidi Ukoha, had told the court that Joseph Longcot of Fire Service Quarters in Kaura District, Abuja, reported the matter at Lugbe Police Station on March 26.

Ukoha said the complainant caught Jacob at about 1 a.m. on March 26 at Lugbe with five pieces of planks suspected to be stolen.

She said that Jacob could not give satisfactory account of where he got the planks and was consequently arrested and handed over to the police.

Ukoha said that the case was still under investigation.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates five years imprisonment for stealing but with an option of fine or both.

However, Jacob had pleaded not guilty to the charge. (NAN)
