Veteran musician, Shina Fagbenro, aka Byron, has called on the Federal Government to use the arts industry as a catalyst for youth development and employment generation.
Fagbenro said in an interview in Lagos that he believed that the creative arts sector could be used as a springboard to elevate the nation’s youths.
According to him, when youths are trained in various arts something beneficial will come out of the experience.
“If youths are taught the various genres of arts, it will help them economically and also fast track the country’s economic growth. There are many avenues that both the government and private sector can incorporate and build structures, which that will be beneficial and make them self-reliant.
“When structures are in place, youths will be taught professionally in music, dance, performing arts, acting, photography to make them skilful people. We do have many professionals but some of them are working in banks, oil companies and some other places.
“They are not encouraged because of how arts have been neglected over the years, those of us that are still here have other jobs,” he said.
He added that if the nation’s teeming youths were put on the right path they are bound to perform creditably in the career of their choice.
He lamented that many youths are into music but are in schools where they are not groomed in the rudiments of music.
“The same thing happens in other skills acquisition because there are no professional schools and expertise to teach them to be the best. We are now in the computer age, so, most computers should have these things for easy handling and learning.
“We must appreciate what some of these youths are doing and help them in a positive way so as to build the talent in them. Every creation in arts has a message, depending on how it is passed but it has to be relevant and teaches the society something.
“Good arts or acts knows no race, creed or country, it soothes our soul and body; it makes people happy and one forgets anger, pride and other vices,” he said Africa’s female musicians sing for women empowerment.
